At the end of January 2013, the team of REGINA (the project
manager, 2 gender experts, 1 youth worker) had a five-days study trip in Basel.
The aim of the trip was to get to know better some of the supporting
organisations, especially those who help to women. Our further aim was to know
more about with what kind of background support and in what kind of
circimstances they work.
The first stop in the journey was the frauen_oase which is our project partner. The frauen_oase (oasis
for women) has been helping to women in predicament for 20 years. Its original
aim is to give a hand to dope-fiends, but nowadays it tries to help others as
well, such as prostitutes. The house is only opened for women.
The Hungarian prostitute women have appeared for 2 years,
recently there are 60 Hungarian women among the clients. Once a week a
Hungarian-speaking worker can talk with them. Difficulties, however, that on
the other days the frauen_oase workers can not contact with the Hungarian women
because in most cases they don’t speak foreign languages.
The clients at fraun_oase can eat and have a shower for
free, buy and wash clothes at a low price. They also get flyers with useful
information, we have found flyers in Hungarian as well.
The women can get condoms and cleaning materisals for free
and once a month the clients can recieve medical attedance. If the
frauen_oase’s doctor can not help, the social workers take the indigents on to
a specialist.
There is an opportunity to use the Internet and Skype, a
computer is always available for the women, where they can also contact with
the REGINA Foundation’s co-workers, at the moment once a month. The frequency
can be increased on-demand.
The frauen_oase is opened from Monday till Thurthday,
mostly on the evening hours.
The second time we visitied the MaKly, which is a family center, its name comes from the two
bordering districts (Matthaus and Klybeck) where the center is located. In
Basel in this two districts live the most foreign immigrants. The visitors in
MaKly are mostly foreigners too, but they are open for everybody from the
districts, so that the families do not feel themselves alone, they can find
companionship and participate in meaningful programs. The organisation has been
working for 18 years. There are several similar organisation in Basel, the
difference is that they try to collect money for additional activities, such as
different kind of trainings, consultancies, handicraft work, common cooking,
etc.
Our next visitation was in a center which ensures the
creation and operational support of self-help groups, its name is Zentrum Selbsthilfe. As far as we know,
there is not any place in Hungary where at the same time that many self-help
group’s operation were induced, these number are around 180 currently.
The initiative started 31 years ago. They help for the
clients to connect other people in similar situation, then create the self-help
group which later can work by itself. Occasionally the facilitators participate
in the conversations, give advices, help to implement the activities. The venue
of the meetings can be the Zentrum Helbsthile or other places, cafes,
restaurants, etc.
For their meetings the groups can rent a room or workshop
preferentially in the help center.
Frauenhaus – protected women
house, the location of our next visitation.
The house has benn operating for 30 years in Basel, female
victims of domestic violence and their children can find here a shelter. The
house is suitable to accomodate 10 women, altogether 17 person with the
children. 6 consultants work at the organisation, other 3 person (director,
secretary, housekeeper) are responsible for running the house, and there are 14
volunteers who are on duty during the nights and weekends.
The house in practice is always full, but it does not mean
that they can not help for indigent women. First of all, there are many other
support organisation, on the other hand almost in every cases they find a place
in a far protected house for the refugees. The women usually stay for a short
period in the house (the last year on average 37 days). During this time they
get efficient help from the social protection system in terms of housing, job
opportunity, children’s placement, etc.
ALIENA – private
foundation for helping for street prostitutes. This was our last meeting in
Basel.
The house of ALIENA is located in the district where the
street prostitues work, the organisation has benn working for 10 years. 2
people have part time jobs at the foundation and there are volunteers as well.
Their services include consultancy (legal, medical), attendance to a doctor,
financial assistance, free meal once a week. They are opened during weekdays,
but in urgent cases they available beside of the opening hours.
During our journey we get an insight into the everyday life
of the organisations, their financial background, professional work, and the
social network which supports them, which was very useful for our work in
Hungary.
