On the 25th of September the frauen_oase members and two colleges from REGINA foundation started their travel towards Miskolc, in order to pay a visit to the HOLDAM foundation and their mother centre, which is located in the HOLDAM yard. The foundation, a community with women and mothers from Miskolc exists since 2007. The HOLDAM yard and mother centre was opened in 2011 in the downtown of Miskolc, where the municipality ensures the availability of the building. On the website www.holdam.hu you can follow their current actions and activities. The REGINA foundation and the HOLDAM association work together since some years. Recently they work together on the development of a mother centre network in Hungary.
After the discussion in the HOLDAM centre the Hungarian- Swiss group visited the Lórántffy Zsuzsanna protestant mother house which can be found in Miskolc as well. The mother centre was founded in 1996 and in the current building they welcome troubled mothers with their children since 2003. They can ensure accommodation for 30 persons. In 2011 from all the families (women and children), who were taken in the mother centre, 51% escaped from a violent relationship.
Our host was, Natalia Kulcsar assistant head of the institution.
On the next day we continued our travel to Szarvas where we visited the Kujburi mother centre. The leader of the women centre, Jónás Jánosné Krisztina, and some of the active members of the centre welcomed us. The mother centre – which was founded 2011 with the aid of the OSI (Open Society Institute) – provides help and service for social disadvantaged mothers. On the defined days there is the possibility to enter the house, wash clothes, cook, use the computer, talk and play with the children. The mother house is not in an easy situation. Not long time ago, they moved to a new place which is bigger than the old, but for example not so modern than the old place and it is further away from the downtown. In the mother centre they welcome teenagers and young adults too, and for them they organise special Saturday meetings. The women spoke openly in the discussion about their poverty, their diseases and their problems.
On the last day of the study visit, we went to the NANE association (www.nane.hu). Györgyi Tóth, the head of the association spoke about her work. The association was founded in 1994 with the goal to start a help hotline for women who are victims of domestic violence. On the hotline qualified female volunteers receive the calls of women who are victims of domestic violence. Additionally, NANE makes important lobby work, instruct civil associations, social workers, police officers, and they work on the realisation of laws. For example they also participated in a training for media specialist.
